View with a Room

"View with a room" was an interactive piece that through a mix of sound and visuals allowed each user to explore the many characters of a single room. The method of interaction for the piece was with a tablet, and to interact with the piece the user could draw on the tablet, as well as push down. The pen's location on the tablet would decide how much of each video to show, and also how much of each sound should play. I wanted the video and sounds abstract enough that a wide variety of responses could occur. This project also was a study in a larger interest of mine, how sound and visuals inform each other when presented in the same context.

From what I could gather, the experience with the installation was positive. Probably the biggest unexpected benefit was with how the piece appeared when it was not being interacted with. After each use, the piece would be left at a different position on the tablet, allowing for a different mix of the videos. I heard from a number of people that they could appreciate this imagery without the sound.

This I think was also a partial problem, in that the imagery overwhelmed the sound. At the heart of my piece I want the combination of sound and image to form the experience for each user.  I think for some the connection was lost, either distracted by the form of interaction, or more attentive to one medium then the other.
